Cocktail Tutorial: Cosmopolitan

Cosmopolitan

A drink that has been popularised by the TV series Sex and the City.

The key to making a good Cosmopolitan is to bring out the citrus flavour of the individual ingredients as much as possible. Ingredients such as citrus vodka, lime juice and cointreau all contain citrus aroma, which are the sources of the fresh citrus taste that you are looking for.

Spraying burnt lemon oil over the cocktail is the garnish that is the most 'appealing to the eye'. However, in my opinion the caramel smell of the oil can mask the fresh citrus scent that you have gathered from all the citrus-flavoured ingredients, so I prefer to simply float a lemon peel as a garnish.

Type: Long drink cocktail
Method: Shake
Glass: Cocktail glass
Garnish: Lemon peel

IBA official recipe (As of November 2011, Cosmopolitan was excluded from the IBA Official Cocktails list. This recipe is from the old list when Cosmopolitan was still on the list)

4.0 cl. Vodka Citron
1.5 cl. Cointreau
1.5 cl. Fresh Lime juice
3.0 cl. Cranberry juice
Add all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake well and strain into large cocktail glass.
Garnish with lime slice.
